The pleasure of the Satguru, abidance in his sweet will is the only concern of a sikh, a lover, because he has no axe of his own to grind, nothing selfish to seek, no boon to ask for. For Bhai Mati Das, to be sawed alive in two halves was the greatest spiritual joy, Bliss Supreme, as that was the pleasure and divine will of his Beloved Satguru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib.

Tempting earthly boons offered to Bhai Mati Das by the Emperor Aurangzeb had no attraction for him and the saw handled by two cruel butchers ready to cut him alive into two halves could not pierce and cut his steadfast faith and resolve. Because for him gold and dust, pleasure and pain were alike, the same. Bhai Mati Das did not even care to look towards members of his family at the time of his execution. Complete renunciation is an essential pre-requisite for Eternal Grace. He was permanently entrenched in the Lotus Feet of his beloved Satguru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib.

Bhai Mati Das adorned the crown of martyrdom. He drank the cup of sorrow, misery, pain, brutal torture and affliction as delightfully as if it was Nectar. The holiest of the holy blood of Bhai Mati Das, has eternally glorified and exalted this Universal Religion of Love.

Bhai Mati Das, completely intoxicated with the Love of his beloved Satguru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, remained perfectly equipoised even when being sawed alive in two halves. The sublime glow of Love, of ‘Prema Bhakti’ shone and radiated like a sun from his face even when being brutally tortured and cut. Aurangzeb could sever his body in two but could not saw and cut his ‘Prema’. When the anesthesia of true love of Prema Bhakti has been administered, no amount of torture or brutality can afflict a true lover.

Such great martyrs go from earth trailing clouds of glory and are the true torch bearers of Prema Bhakti.

What a dreadful trail of suffering for Bhai Mati Das and resultantly what a wonderful divine elevation!

Suffering within the Divine Will and ‘Raza’ of the Satguru is spiritually most purifying and elevating.

When Satguru accepts someone as his protege, He bestows the boon of fearlessness on him. Bhai Mati Das owned nothing else but Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib who had accepted Bhai Mati Das as His own. He had showered His Grace and blessed him with divine Love. And because Love-Divine is invincible, indestructible, invulnerable, no man-made saw could pierce it and sever it from the soul of Bhai Mati Das, although his mortal frame could be cut to pieces. For, in his soul dwelt his beloved Guru.

Such phenomenal and miraculous is the spiritual strength and power of a true sikh intoxicated with the Nectar of Love of his Beloved Satguru. Such a sikh is the finest product of the resplendent House of Guru Nanak, an achievement devoutly to be wished by all human beings.

Devotional tears and holy blood of his martyred human form speak in themselves the most forceful language of true love.

Unique are the expressions of true love and unique the ways adopted by a divine lover to give expression to this wonderful emotion.

A true sikh is thoroughly intoxicated with the love of his beloved Satguru. He craves for nothing, not even for Mukti. Bhai Mati Das rejected, all the tempting offers made by the Emperor.

Any craving whether it is for worldly kingdom or for salvation is a deficiency, a sign of incompleteness, a lack of Love.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says in Raag Gandhari:

Raj Na Chahau Mukat Na Chahau
Man Preet Charan Kamalaray

  Sri Guru Granth Sahib (534)

“I crave not for kingdom or Mukti (salvation).
My soul thirsts for the love of Your Lotus Feet.

The Satguru assesses true love by subjecting the lover to severe ordeals and tests. It is only a rare blessed soul that passes and survives all these ordeals and becomes a deserving claimant, an ‘Adhikari’ of Satguru’s highest Grace.

Radiating bliss while being subjected to arduous pain on the Cross, in the fire and in the beheading itself, the Guru had set the greatest example for humanity to follow and emulate for the attainment of Supreme Grace through martyrdom.

Bliss was writ large on the holy face of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib even as he sat on the burning hot griddle under the cruel shower of burning hot sand. The same ecstasy was manifest on the Holy face of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib when the most cruel death was handed out to him by the most dogmatic Emperor of the Time.

The mere prospect of martyrdom in the holy presence of his beloved Satguru had reduced Bhai Mati Das to a mass of spiritual joy. Under the God-like gaze of his beloved Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, his face radiated like the sun with Supreme happiness while he was being sawed alive in two pieces.

Martyrdom of Bhai Mati Das as narrated by Baba Narinder Singh Ji:

My esteemed father, once in a divine and ecstatic mood, narrated the actual incident of the martyrdom of Bhai Mati Das in Pathankot when Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib’s Martyrdom-Gurpurab, was being celeberated in our house, 33, South Colony.

While he was narrating the incident, tears flowed down his cheeks, and everyone present felt as if transported into the past and almost witnessed the enactment of the whole incident as if it was taking place afresh in their very presence.

The last wish of Bhai Mati Das was to die facing his beloved Satguru. For his eyes it was a divine feast to see his beloved Lord till his last breath. What a wonderful, unique, spiritual nourishment for the soul and body through the blessed eyes! What a rewarding utility of the God-given gift of eyes!

He felt absolutely serene in the loving presence of his beloved Satguru, and was grateful to his executors for their gracious role in helping him to embrace martyrdom at the holy feet of his Lord.

  “A worldly person fears death
A seeker after Truth is hopeful of conquering death
A lover-divine loves death”

  said Baba Narinder Singh Ji

He then most passionately kisses the saw placed over his head, which was to grant him immortality under the very gaze of his beloved Master.

Bhai Mati Das was in the direct personal service of the Divine Guru. He had availed the opportunity of washing the holy feet of the Satguru with water and drinking holy ‘Charanamrit. He had the singular privilege of bathing the holy feet with his humble and devotional tears. In his impending execution, he saw the opportunity of bathing his Lord’s feet now with his blood for which he prayed consummately.

The Guru granted Bhai Mati Das this last prayer so that when the execution commenced and the saw pierced his now deified head, the first shower of the martyr’s blood fell on the Lotus Feet of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. This was the climax of divine love whereby Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib accepted the most precious gift from his most beloved sikh. He with his compassionate hand and with his holy finger applied that blood on His Forehead.

Nanak Nadri Nadar Nihal

Immersed in total Guru consciousness, a true sikh is totally detached from body consciousness and world consciousness. Bhai Mati Das is drinking the Nactar of the Divine Glance of his beloved Guru. His blessed eyes are feasting on the holy vision (Darshans) of the Great Guru. He is being sawed alive in two halves in full public view. With Guru consciousness at its peak, Bhai Mati Das remained unaffected, both from his bodily pain and from the world. He is possessed by total and exclusive love of the Guru.

This Bliss being Eternal does not leave or abandon true lovers at the time of their cruel execution. Miraculous is the magical influenceof this Bliss granted by the holy gaze, of the Satguru.

Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib then closely enfolds Bhai Mati Das in the warmth of his embrace and thereafter I see Bhai Mati Das aglow in the Divine Heart of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib.

Lord Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib enshrines Bhai Mati Das in his heart and Trikuti.

Nanak Satgur Sikh Ko Jee Naal Samarey
  Sri Guru Granth Sahib (286)

“Satguru holds his beloved sikh dearer to himself than his own soul.

  Khalsa Mero Jind Pran
Khalsa Meri Jaan Ki Jaan

  Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib

“Khalsa is my body, breath of my breath, life of my life and soul of my soul.

In true Bliss “Anand” as it is called, nothing can disturb the equipoise of a true lover under any circumstances. Hunger and sleep, heat or cold, pleasure and pain, life and death, do not affect this eternal peace and perpetual bliss. Such a lover transcends the duality of opposites and for him this blissful state is continuous and remains unbroken.

As the sun never sets, so does a luminous soul having gained this state shine eternally.

A sikh, immersed in Guru’s love, in Guru consciousness, loses body-consciousness and hence feels no pain or torture being inflicated on him. In true love of the Guru, the perfect state of Guru consciousness affords requisite insulation of the soul from body consciousness, hence no reflection of pain and torture onthe joyful face.

Prema is not different form God. As God and His Nam are not different, so Divine and Divine love are not different. Divine Love is the very picture of God and it shines in all splendour and glory on the radiant faces of true Divine Lovers.

“Only a blessed person who has tasted the Nectar of Self Realisation and has also tasted the Bliss of Martyrdom,is in a position to authenticate that Bliss of martyrdom is far superior to the Bliss of Self Realisation “
  Baba Narinder Singh Ji

Gur Kirpa Jeh Nar Ko Kini
Teh Eh Jugat Pachhani
Nanak Leen Bhayo Gobind Sion
Jion Pani Sang Pani

  Sri Guru Granth Sahib (633)

This is true union with the Lord. Bhai Mati Das as pure love gets dissolved in the Lord of Love Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. This is how Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib had blessed His true devotee. Bhai Mati Das who was perpetually floating in transcendent Divine Love finally merges in the very Decon of Love, his most beloved Satguru Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, as water merges with water.
